Our 2025 Global Young Achiever Roslyn left home at just 16. The Team programme helped her build the skills to support herself independently, and her career is off to a flying start.
In June 2025, 19-year-old Roslyn from St. Lucia received the King’s Trust Global Young Achiever Award from KTI Global Ambassador DJ Cuppy and Brian Duffy, CEO of Watches of Switzerland Group, at a star-studded ceremony in London’s Southbank Centre.
With a turbulent family background, Roslyn was just 16 when she made the brave decision to move out and make her own way in the world.
When she heard about the Team programme for young people who are not in work, Roslyn signed up, keen to gain the skills to support herself, and also to help herself heal after a difficult time. The programme was transformative, helping Roslyn to find her voice and discover capabilities she didn’t know she had.
Hands-on learning
Our Team programme, delivered by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, is a 12-week full-time personal development programme for 17- to 30-year-olds. Focused on building core skills, it combines outdoor and community challenges with classroom learning and work experience placements.
Through practical group activities such as first aid and tree planting, Roslyn gradually built up her teamwork and communication skills. At first she found it hard to trust others, and to express her thoughts and ideas. But as her capabilities blossomed, so too did her confidence, empowering her to take on new challenges with enthusiasm, including leadership roles. Soon after completing the programme, Roslyn landed her first job.
‘I am now employed. I am someone new. I changed a lot during the programme,’ Roslyn explains. ‘One of the most valuable lessons I learned is how to communicate effectively. I am excited about the future and grateful for the experiences acquired that have shaped me.’
An emerging leader
Roslyn has already impressed her new employers with her skills, especially her ability to articulate her thoughts and connect with others. Within just two months of starting her new role, Roslyn stepped up into a supervisory position, giving her further opportunities to learn and gain leadership experience.
Grateful for the opportunities she has had, and keen to give back to her community, Roslyn is also now a study buddy at her local primary school, supporting grade five students as they navigate their own educational journeys.
Rising from a background marked by hardship and trauma, Roslyn has transformed her struggles into fuel for success, proving that resilience and ambition can thrive against all odds.
